Green Building Practices

Dusel Custom Builders has been focused on green building since its inception. For us, Green Building is more than highly efficient appliances or recycled materials. We take a holistic approach to home building and renovation, looking at the house as a system, and concentrating on the following 4 areas.

1. Energy efficiency
2. Resource efficiency
3. Indoor air quality
4. Durability, and functionality

Energy Efficiency
We strive to minimize a homes energy consumption through its life, as well as during the construction process. High performance insulation, solar panels and quality windows are among the strategies we regularly employ to achieve this end. We also minimize the amount of energy used in construction by using locally made materials whenever possible.

Resource Efficiency
We are avid jobsite recyclers. In remodeling, there is a lot of waste in the initial demolition phase of a remodel. Re-usable items are donated to Re-Source, and we try to re-use as much as possible within the project. During a project, we separate framing lumber, metal, cardboard, and paper for recycling. We generally recycle at least 50% of the trash we produce. We are also familiar with finish products that incorporate a lot of recycled material in them, like composite decking, and cellulose insulation.

Indoor Air Quality
Indoor air quality. Today’s high tech building materials are wonderful, but often contain adhesives that off-gas Volatile Organic Compounds, some of which have been known to cause cancer. We use low V.O.C. adhesives and paint on all of our projects, and work with homeowners to find healthy products throughout the home.

Durability, and Functionality
Simply building well is inherently green. As a remodeler, I go in to old houses and see what works, and what fails. The most energy efficient home in the world is worthless if it leaks and needs to be renovated after 15 years. Good weather-proofing, flashing details, and sound construction is the greenest thing we can do for a home, and we do it on every project. We also know that lifestyles and technology change rapidly, so we try to “future-proof” homes whenever possible. Simple things like pulling extra electric circuits in to an attic or basement can make the next home improvement project easy and simple.
